Downtown and citywide

An international art competition in which works are installed across hundreds of venues throughout the city. The public votes alongside a jury to determine winners. Over its history ArtPrize has drawn artists from dozens of countries and hundreds of thousands of visitors to Grand Rapids over its two-and-a-half-week run. It fundamentally changed how people inside and outside the city think about Grand Rapids as a creative place. One of the largest public art events in the world by attendance.

A large-scale outdoor winter festival spread across downtown. Light installations, sculptures, and art experiences fill public spaces, parks, and the riverfront. Designed to give Grand Rapids a reason to be outside in winter rather than simply enduring it. One of the most ambitious municipal winter festivals in the Midwest.

A German-style Christmas market in the heart of downtown, featuring vendor stalls, seasonal food and drinks, and holiday programming. One of the most popular winter traditions in the city and a natural complement to World of Winter. Gets busy on weekends — weekday evenings are a better option for a less crowded experience.

A comedy festival presented by Gilda's Club Grand Rapids, with performances ranging from nationally touring headliners to local and emerging comedians. Both ticketed shows and free community events throughout the week-plus run. One of the more distinctive annual events in the city, and one that consistently punches above its weight for the caliber of talent it brings in.

A free three-day outdoor festival celebrating visual art, music, dance, and theater centered on Calder Plaza in downtown. One of the longest-running community art festivals in West Michigan. A strong local tradition and typically one of the first big outdoor events of the summer season.

Grand Rapids has a rich and growing calendar of cultural festivals celebrating the city's diverse communities. These include events such as the Latin American Festival, celebrating Latino heritage and culture with music, food, and community programming; the Pacific Islander Cultural Festival, highlighting the traditions and contributions of Pacific Islander communities in West Michigan; the African-American Heritage Festival; and cultural celebrations tied to the city's significant Burmese and Southeast Asian communities, among others. Many of these events are organized by community organizations and neighborhood associations. Food Truck Fridays

A weekly summer gathering of food trucks at Rosa Parks Circle on Friday afternoons and evenings. A popular after-work tradition and one of the most reliably busy outdoor events downtown during the warmer months.

Seasonal — Winter

Rosa Parks Circle Ice Skating

The outdoor ice rink at Rosa Parks Circle opens each winter and offers free admission to skate (with a rental fee for skates). A central downtown winter activity and one of the more genuinely pleasant things to do in the city during cold months.

Weekly — Summer

Movies in the Park

Outdoor film screenings at parks around the city through the summer months. Free admission. Locations and film selections vary by year — check the city's parks department for the current season's schedule.

Monthly — Year-round

First Fridays

A monthly gallery walk and arts event in the Heartside and downtown arts district. Galleries open their doors, studios host receptions, and the neighborhood activates on the first Friday of each month. A good way to see the local arts scene without committing to a ticketed event.

Seasonal — Summer

Fulton Street Farmers Market

One of the oldest farmers markets in Michigan, running seasonally in the Eastown area. Local produce, vendors, prepared food, and a consistent neighborhood draw on market days. Check seasonal hours before making the trip.

Monthly — Spring–Fall

East Hills Art Walk

A recurring arts event through the East Hills neighborhood, featuring local galleries, studios, and businesses opening up for a walkable art experience. A smaller and more neighborhood-scaled counterpart to First Fridays.

Van Andel Arena

The main downtown arena, home to the Griffins hockey team and the venue for major touring concerts and large events. The anchor of downtown's entertainment district.

DeVos Place

A large convention center on the riverfront downtown, hosting trade shows, conferences, consumer expos, and events like the Wine, Beer & Food Festival. Connected to the Amway Grand Plaza hotel.

DeVos Performance Hall

An elegant mid-sized concert hall adjacent to DeVos Place, home to the Grand Rapids Symphony and used for Broadway touring productions, classical performances, and theatrical events. One of the better acoustic halls in Michigan.

Outdoor amphitheater

Acrisure Amphitheater

Purpose-built for major outdoor concerts and large-scale events, with views of the downtown skyline. One of the most significant new entertainment venues in West Michigan in decades and a major addition to the city's live event infrastructure.

Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater

An outdoor amphitheater on the grounds of Meijer Gardens that hosts a summer concert series drawing national and international touring artists. One of the most pleasant outdoor concert settings in West Michigan. Tickets typically sell out quickly for major acts.

GLC Live at 20 Monroe

A mid-sized indoor music venue in the heart of downtown, directly adjacent to Van Andel Arena. Hosts touring acts across genres — rock, hip-hop, country, electronic. The go-to mid-capacity venue for shows that don't need arena scale.

Wealthy Theatre

A restored neighborhood theater in the Eastown/Heartside area with an eclectic programming calendar — film screenings, live performance, community events, and arts programming. One of the most community-oriented venues in the city.

Public plaza

Calder Plaza

An open public plaza in front of City Hall, home to Alexander Calder's famous La Grande Vitesse sculpture. The primary outdoor venue for Festival of the Arts, Pride, and various city-organized events. Free and publicly accessible year-round.

Rosa Parks Circle

An amphitheater-shaped public plaza in the center of downtown, used for Food Truck Fridays, concerts, and community events in summer, and as an outdoor ice rink in winter. The most central public gathering space in the city.

Baseball stadium

LMCU Ballpark

Home of the West Michigan Whitecaps minor league baseball team, located in Comstock Park just north of the city. A classic minor league experience — affordable, family-friendly, and a good summer outing even if you are not a devoted baseball fan.

Sports in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids has three professional sports teams across three leagues. None are major league, but all three offer good live sports experiences at prices well below what you would pay in a larger market.

Minor League Baseball — High-A Central

West Michigan Whitecaps

Season: April – September

The High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, playing at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park. Summer baseball at its most accessible — affordable tickets, an easy family outing, and a minor league atmosphere that rewards going at least once a summer.

AHL — American Hockey League

Grand Rapids Griffins

Season: October – April

The AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, playing at Van Andel Arena downtown. One of the most successful franchises in AHL history with two Calder Cup championships (2013 and 2017). Hockey at a high level for significantly less than an NHL ticket, with a strong local following.

NBA G League

Grand Rapids Gold

Season: November – April

The NBA G League affiliate of the Denver Nuggets, playing at Van Andel Arena. G League basketball features a mix of NBA prospects, players developing their game, and veterans extending careers. A close-up look at professional basketball talent at accessible price points.

USL Championship — Under construction

Grand Rapids is getting a professional soccer team in the USL Championship, the second tier of American professional soccer.
