Why this section isn't built yet

Grand Rapids has a long history — Anishinaabe settlement along the Grand River centuries before European contact, a founding in 1826, a lumber and furniture boom that shaped the whole region, waves of immigration, and a lot of change since. Some of that is already touched on in About Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids 101, but a proper History section deserves more depth and care than a quick summary can offer.

We are looking for knowledgeable local historians, researchers, and community members who can help document this history properly — including the parts of the story that are harder to tell, like the displacement of the Anishinaabe people who lived here first. If that's you, or you have historical information, sources, or documentation that belongs here, we would like to hear from you.

Topics we expect this section to eventually cover:

• Indigenous history and the Anishinaabe presence along the Grand River
• Founding and early settlement (1826 onward)
• The lumber and furniture manufacturing era
• Waves of immigration and the communities that shaped the city
• Notable events, figures, and turning points
• How individual neighborhoods came to be
• The 1916 home rule charter and civic history
• Recent history — economic shifts, ArtPrize, and the city's modern era
